Kansas paper finds state's farmers have gotten very little from annual Farm Aid concert

Farm Aid, the annual concert held to help family farmers continue farming, was held in Kansas City Aug. 13, prompting the Lawrence Journal-World to ask how much has gone to help farmers in Kansas, a state strongly identified with farming. It turns out that Kansas farm interests have received only about 0.2 percent of the $36 million Farm Aid has raised since 1985, the newspaper's Sarah Henning found. The main reason, Henning suggests, is a lack of applicants from the Sunflower State. (Read more)

Farm Aid may give grants only to non-profit organizations that apply for funding, Fox 4 in Kansas City reports. Unfortunately many farmers don't apply. With five applications this year, "we have more grant applications from Kansas groups than ever, Jennifer Fahy of Farm Aid, told Fox 4. Farm Aid does more than give money to farmers; it helps them by "working on issues of credit which is hard to come by for farmers" and "raising awareness about the need for help," Fahy added.
