County starts camp to interest kids in health careers and get them to bring skills back home

Some rural areas are combating shortages of health professionals by interesting local young people in such work and encouraging them to bring their skills back to the community. One is Washakie County, Wyoming, population 8,533, which last year started Camp Healthcare for rising eighth-graders, Jackie Borchardt of the Casper Star-Tribune reports. This year, "Campers learned how to dress burns from a Casper College alumna . . . talked with a family practice doctor who grew up in Meeteetse," and visited the rehabilitation center at Banner Health Washakie Medical Center in Worland, Borchardt reports. While at the center, 14-year-old Justin Roussan (facing camera) placed a sling underneath Anthony Eibert, 13, with help from rehabilitation manager Roger Pomeroy. The three-day camp is free.
