Mich. governor signs law letting board decide what wolves will be hunted, when and where

Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation Wednesday allowing the Michigan Natural Resources Commission to determine which species of wolf are considered game, thus blocking efforts by an animal-rights group to try to overturn a 2012 wolf-hunting law, reports Gary Heinlein for The Detroit News.

Keep Michigan Wolves Protected had asked the commission to delay any decision on wolf hunting until after the 2014 election, and to force a re-vote on the hunting law passed in December, reports Heinlein. The new law ends any hope of that.

The commission "plans to vote on a proposal that will lead to wolf hunting this fall in selected Upper Peninsula areas where wolves have been a problem," reports Heinlein. Supporters say wolves have been attacking livestock and pets. (Read more)
