New Mexico might not be the first state to open a horse slaughter facility after all. The proposed slaughter plant passed an April inspection by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but now USDA officials are withholding final approval and questioning whether the needs a water-pollution permit. The lawyer for Valley Meat Co. said the plant won't discharge anything into water, and "such a
permit was never needed during the 20 years the plant slaughtered
cattle," The Associated Press reports. (AP photo: Rick De Los Santos, who wants to open the horse slaughterhouse)
Another potential roadblock arose Monday, when state Attorney General Gary King, a vocal critic of horse slaughter, ruled that horse meat is an adulterated product that is illegal to produce in the state, Stephan Dinan reports for The Washington Times. (Read more) AP notes that King, is running for the Democratic nomination to face Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, who has opposed the abattoir.
Adulterated food is meat that has come from animals treated with drugs, including an anti-inflammatory commonly found in racehorses, and medications used to treat bacterial, parasitic and viral infections, AP reports. If the plant were to open, it would be the first such plant in operation in the U.S. since 2007. (Read more)

they give the cattle we eat banamine bute when they get down. The cows that test positive for bruceillos are slaughtered and then the meat acidised and we buy it in the stores as lean hamburger meat, yet no one says anything and labels the meat saying that. I have eaten horse meat. when I was in england last time beef was 28 dollars a pound horse meat was 7 dollars a pound it tasted wonderful yet I wondered if it could of been a horse I had sold at one time or another. We are not saying you have to eat horse. Do we make you eat liver if you don't like it or make you drink milk some of you drink almond milk instead its your choice. I'm sick of seeing starving horses abused horses. Everyone can afford to buy one but they don't ever ck in to the cost of taking care of one. How many horses do you own? how many horses have you rescued? How many of you might of eaten horse meat and never known it. OMG you better go to your doctor and have tests down some of your symtoms might be related to that pork or beef you ate with the growth hormones and pain meds that were shot into them!!!!!!!!!!
