"Are you looking for a new way to cover your community's chronic problems? Are you looking to meaningfully engage with your community (and staff) differently? How could this lens of reporting benefit Rural America — and specifically, your community?"

So asks the Solutions Journalism Network as it launches a new professional-development opportunity specifically for rural-serving newsrooms. The Rural Cohort is a seven-month professional development program designed to support and train newsrooms seeking to learn solutions journalism and put it into regular practice.

This isn't a program designed to add work to a newsroom's already full plate, SJ says. Instead, cohort members will learn how to convert some of the vital and valuable coverage they're already doing into a solutions framework. Examples: county commission agendas, school board meetings, press releases and regular beat coverage.

SJ hopes to to have 10 newsrooms in its first cohort and that each will produce at least six solutions stories for their communities. Cohort members will meet once a month for two hours of training and another hour a month with a partner newsroom and a coach for mentorship.
